The award-winning childrens chorus of the Sulochanadevi Singhania School performed these chants as part of the Himalayan Institutes program for the Maha Kumbha Mela in January 2001. The Singhania School is located in Indias state of Maharashtra near Bombay. The 21 members of the chorus range in age from 10 to 15 years and are led by their team of teachers.
Once every 144 years, due to the alignment of celestial bodies and the intense spiritual practices of saints and sages, benevolent forces are perfectly polarized at the convergence of Indias sacred rivers. This event is the Maha Kumbha Mela, which last took place in January 2001 in its traditional setting on the bank of the Ganges in Allahabad, the City of God.
The energy of the Maha Kumbha Mela is one of renewal, of ancient traditions brought to life by a new generation in order to shape a better world. It is in this spirit that the children of the Singhania School performed these chants, their young voices bringing to life the ancient musical traditions of India.
